Let’s chat! with Lixuan

Street SpotlightsUncategorized

Let’s Chat! is a conversational series where we are in conversation with some of our remarkable volunteers and seasonal staff about their experience with The Salvation Army and our Ministry Unit, Boundless Vancouver. Read along as we deep dive into who they are and how they found their community here at Boundless Vancouver.

Fourteen years ago, Lixuan embarked on a life-changing journey from China, where she was studying Medicine at Fudan University. Despite being in a prestigious program, she felt so hopeless about the future as she couldn't envision a fulfilling life in China. Her experiences reinforced the belief that life without freedom means nothing. Her determination to the pursuit of freedom inspired her to start a brand-new chapter of life in Canada.

Canada was an unknown world to her, and she arrived with no financial stability. She was so grateful that The Salvation Army accepted her with open arms, providing food, shelter, and support. Getting a job in Canada wasn't easy. With experience working in hospitals in China, she knew she had to adapt. As encouraged by her caseworker, Debby, she enrolled in a Medical Lab Assistant program, aced her exams, and completed a practicum at Vancouver General Hospital and now she is working part-time there!

Without any relatives or friends in Vancouver, her caseworker became her anchor. The weekly Pathway of Hope meetings and unwavering support restored her confidence during the toughest times.

“The Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver provided me with food, clothes, furniture, and most importantly, HOPE. I decided to keep practicing nursing at VCC, working hard and achieving good grades.”

She said gracefully. She was thankful for Debby's prayers and guidance, which helped her dreams come true, making her feel God's presence in her lives.

“The one-on-one coaching (The Pathway of Hope) was a lifesaver, addressing my stress, insomnia, and other health issues. Debby's advice on setting boundaries and handling difficult situations has been invaluable.” She added, “When I was very sick and hospitalized, Debby was the only one who visited me.”

Although she is not a Christian yet, the verse from the Bible, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6 NIV), has been a source of encouragement for Lixuan. Although the journey from China to Canada has been challenging, with faith, support, and resilience, Lixuan has built a new life filled with hope and purpose.
