We dream of a community full of hope and joy, where children feel safe and families are restored. We dream of a community where neighbours are TRANSFORMED and FREE from the chains of poverty. We are committed to WALKING with our neighbours that SEEK a brighter tomorrow.

Pathway of Hope is an intensive 6 -12 month support & mentorship initiative for Vancouver neighbours who want to take back control of their lives. Multiple support systems will be provided during the journey, in the hopes of bringing holistic stability.

We believe the most effective way for our participants to succeed is when they realize their inner strengths, regain their dignity, and find a community where they belong. Pathway of Hope connects participants with caseworkers, emotional and spiritual support, volunteers, community programs and external resources and referrals.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, I felt isolated and lost when it came to my professional career. Joining Pathway of Hope created an opportunity to set new goals and take actions to achieve my dreams. Because of Pathway of Hope, I could focus on important opportunities to volunteer and to serve the community. Thank you so much for changing my life."

“Pathway of Hope is a great program for me. I learned a lot about myself and it helped me to keep going even when I felt like I didn't have what it takes to go on. It reminds me that God is with me through this process."

“After I came here, I became more positive and energetic. I live alone so nobody talked to me. I am so blessed to meet Debby, my caseworker. She is strong, smart and very kind, providing me with advice on how to change my lifestyle, my presentation skills and how to achieve my goals step by step. I like her so so much..."

Around 3.4 million Canadians, including over 622,000 children, live in poverty. Many face a cycle of recidivism where they move from crisis to crisis and remain vulnerable. Pathway of Hope focuses on identifying and addressing root causes of poverty for individuals and families in Vancouver.

Our Team

Two essential roles in the Pathway of Hope program are the Caseworker and the Spiritual & Emotional Care Representative.

Caseworkers manage the social services functions and builds a relationship with the participant. They facilitate the planning of short & long term goals, and support participants to put plans into action.

Spiritual & Emotional Care Representatives provide individualized support to nurture participants' well-being from a holistic perspective. In addition, they provide a link to spiritual communities and mental health resources.

Debby Yang

Pathway of Hope Caseworker

Debby joined the Boundless Vancouver team in 2020 as a frontline volunteer and then moved to a Caseworker position on our staff team, focusing on the Pathway of Hope initiative as one of her responsibilities.

Debby was born in Taiwan and went to school in the United States. She is familiar with Asian cultural values, helping her to understand Asian families and offering her language skills. She was trained as a counsellor for those experiencing domestic violence, as an emotional support and addictions coach, and she also worked many years in the legal industry.

Outside of work, Debby’s love of creativity includes fine art photography, hiking, Zumba, Salsa dancing, cooking, traveling, music and playing piano.

Tamara Randlesome

Spiritual & Emotional Support Representative

Note: Pathway of Hope caseworkers are not settlement workers, career facilitators, counsellors or mental health specialists. If your specific need requires professional or specialist help, we will connect you with the appropriate services. We do have chaplains on site to meet for emotional and spiritual care.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am in a crisis and I need help. Can Pathway of Hope help me?

Are you or someone you know in life threatening danger? Please call 9-1-1.

If you or someone you know is suicidal, please call 1-800-784-2433 (Suicide Hotline)

For any non-life threatening crisis, please come chat with us so we can understand your situation. Depending on the crisis, Pathway of Hope may or may not be the right initiative at the current time. We would like to get you the proper help you need first to stabilize before admitting you to Pathway of Hope. Come chat with us.

I am looking for a job. Will Pathway of Hope get me a job?

Unfortunately, Pathway of Hope is not an employment agency and caseworkers are not employment counselors. Caseworkers can mentor and will provide the tools and resources to empower you to find work. We believe, when a participant is willing to take action & ownership, that is where personal growth will occur.

Does Pathway of Hope handle trauma and mental health cases?

Unfortunately, we do not have counselors and psychologists on staff. Pathway of Hope provides general social support and have chaplains on site to handle general emotional support for the community. Please contact us if you need help and don’t know who to talk to. We would love to connect you with organizations and professionals that are equipped to handle these specialized matters.

How long do I need to be on Pathway of Hope for and what is the commitment level like?

Pathway of Hope is a 6 -12 month intensive support & mentorship initiative for Vancouver neighbours that wish to take back control of their lives. For Pathway to be effective, it is ideal for the participant to meet with their caseworker once a week. Once all goals are met or the caseworker sees that the participant can handle things well on their own, there will be a conversation about graduating from the initiative.

I live too far away and traveling takes a long time. Can the caseworker come to my home or meet me in a Cafe?

Caseworkers can do in-person visitations, meet you at a cafe, or communicate with you through Zoom. If you are outside of Vancouver, please still contact us and we will try to find a Salvation Army unit with a Pathway of Hope caseworker that is closer to your area.

Can Pathway of Hope staff conduct their appointments on zoom if I have a laptop?

Yes, Pathway of Hope can be conducted through Zoom if coming in-person is difficult for you. We encourage in-person meet ups as we want to build a relationship with you, and it can be difficult through a computer screen.

I work full time on the weekdays. Does Pathway of Hope have after work hours or weekend appointments?

Pathway of Hope in Vancouver operates weekdays, 9:30am to 3:00pm, at Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver. Outside regular hours, appointments are limited but may be arranged with individual caseworkers if they are available.

I have children to take care of and I don’t have a babysitter. Can I bring my children to the appointments?

Yes, you can bring children if you do not have daycare or a babysitter. We understand that it can be difficult for parents without family to find support. Having children during the sessions can be distracting, so setting up an arrangement is of course ideal. However, if bringing children is the only way for you to seek help, Pathway of Hope still welcomes you and we will try to accommodate.

How long is each Pathway of Hope session?

Pathway of Hope sessions can vary from 15 mins to 1 hour depending on the needs. When a participant first starts Pathway of Hope, there will be a lot of meetings involving completion of assessments and goal building exercises. Expect 1 hour meetings for the first couple months. Once we are in the action phase, appointments will become shorter depending on the situation.

What if I thought I needed only 6 months to achieve my goals, but I need more time and support from Pathway of Hope? Will you stop supporting me?

Pathway of Hope can finish as early as 4 months and ideally as long as 12 months. It really depends on the readiness of the participant. Nothing is perfect and we recognise that people’s life situations will change and everyone’s pacings are different. We hope to be flexible and adapt to your needs. If you have any concerns, feel free to be open with your caseworker about it.

I want to join Pathway of Hope because I need emotional support and someone that can listen to me.

We have chaplains on-site to provide emotional & spiritual support for anyone that is in need. You don’t need to be in Pathway of Hope to request for a Chaplain. Pathway of Hope is focused on neighbours motivated to achieve their goals and want accountability. If you feel you are not ready for Pathway of Hope right now, that is totally okay. You are welcome to approach us when you feel ready.

I don’t know what my goals are, can I still join Pathway of Hope?

If you believe things have to change in your life and are motivated to do so, we would love to explore with you your hopes and ambitions through the initial intake interview. Once admitted, we can use several POH assessment tools which will help you discover what kinds of goals to set that are relevant to your needs.
